Before an interview, do you rehearse what you'll say? You tidy the story from your student years, align your motivation with the company, even fine-tune how you speak. Everyone does it, and there's nothing wrong with it. But the more you edit, the harder it gets to see what you actually have to offer. Skill at self-presentation quietly starts standing in for character — and repeating that at every round of selection wears everyone down.
If what's actually being measured, on the good days and the bad, is just "how good was the editing" — today, let's question that whole system for a moment.
This is something I heard directly from an HR person at a company. In a 30-minute casual interview, a student answered, "I like driving. I like the feeling of completing a trip alone." The interviewer's read: "not a team player." The result: rejected.
A few months later, that same HR person happened to share a meal with the student on another occasion, and talking with them was a surprise. In reality they were sincere, someone who put the people around them first — if anything, the kind of person a team trusts. None of that had come across in the narrow frame of a 30-minute interview.
It wasn't that the student was at fault, or that the interviewer lacked an eye for people. A single round of Q&A, sliced into such a short span of time, simply can't reproduce someone's character in the first place. What failed to come across wasn't the student's substance — it was the mechanism for conveying it. Hearing this story, I felt like I understood a little better what selection actually measures.
What KIBOU is building is a route where things come across without any editing. Students stay at a host's home for up to two nights, three days, exactly as they are. There's no script. No rehearsed answers. The record of three ordinary days — breakfast prep, conversation during a drive — reaches the company just as it happened. There's nothing you need to prepare in advance to say.
It isn't a one-way evaluation either. Reviews go both ways — from student to host, and from host to student. That record reaches the company only with the person's consent. It's a fundamentally different structure from a verdict handed down in 30 minutes.
In a system where padding your story buys no advantage, nobody needs to pad anything in the first place. Swap the time you'd spend editing for three days spent simply as yourself. That's the ground KIBOU stands on.
→ On the word "sonomanma."
Stopping the editing doesn't mean you're guaranteed to fail the selection. Before you even hear more about it, just try touching the entrance to the system first.
